I think I updated this in the midst of my first on-call on Friday last time. Well, for the record, Friday night was a very busy night in the trauma unit of WakeMed. I had 8 traumas between 7:30pm and 7:30am which meant less than an hour of sleep for me. It also meant a lot of other things, but those I cannot go into too much, however, I will say that of those 8 cases, 4 of them led to death. Fun times at WakeMed... and I get to be on call again tomorrow...

Other than that, life is well here in NC. We finally got some rain this weekend of which we were in desperate need of, and I hope there is more of it to come. I also went and visited TAPC in Durham on Sunday. It was good to share in worship with those folks.

on-call

hi all-
I am in the midst of my first 24 hour on-call at WakeMed. So far, it's going pretty well. I still have 13-14 hours to go, so we shall see...

Anyways, this CPE experience is turning out to be quite challenging but I think thats a good thing. It is forcing me to think about life in a finite but intentional way, that is to say, when one has to spend part of one's day talking with and sitting with people as they wrestle with life and death (litterally) the one can who is listening can not help but wrestle with those issues also... at least that's how it is for me.

So, that's the latest. Visiting TAPC on Sunday so that should be nice.

sorry for the delay

Sorry that I haven't updated sooner. I started my summer CPE (chaplain internship at WakeMed Hospital) this past Monday and have been mentally and emotionally worn out from it all. And I mean that in a good way. It's pretty amazing the responsibility and authority given to us as chaplains and already I have had some difficult end of life care conversations with people. while HIPPA laws prohibit me from going into too much details, I can tell you that I lost my very first patient in the trauma room, when i was shadowing a couple of days before my internship began. I also have already been assigned my units- I am responsible for the 3-C unit- which is Urology and Dialysis unit, and other issues pertaining to the renal/rectal area. I also have one of the trauma bays and I am the chaplain for one of the "extensions" of WakeMed, an extended care facility in Fuquay-Varina, which I go to once or twice a week. All in all, I have 85 beds in my units, or in other words, up to 85 patients to care for.
Today I also had my annual consultation with my CPM and have been approved to continue on in the process. It went pretty well and they said I could schedule my final assessment once I pass my ords and finish my spm, so, hopefully, by this time next year I will not have to go to annual consultation because I would have graduated and accepted a call to a church somewhere... its fun to dream, anyways.
I also went to a party at my brother's new house this evening. He cooked up some good ole NC barbecue and beer can chicken- I can tell you the chicken was pretty tasty-
